Hungarian Justice Minister in Brussels to discuss EU funds

Hungarian Justice Minister Judit Varga has travelled to Brussels to discuss EU funds. Varga will also meet the commissioner for the rule of law and budget.

Judit Varga, Hungarian Minister of Justice, travelled to Brussels. On Wednesday, she will meet Didier Reynders, the European Commissioner for Justice. On Thursday, Varga will be received by Johannes Hanh, Commissioner for the Budget.

The meetings will focus on EU funds and the rule of law process. The Hungarian government is keen to allay EU concerns about corruption. The European Commission is also looking for answers on the independence of the Hungarian judiciary, the transparency of the legislature and the respect for democratic norms, 444.hu writes.

The Hungarian government has time until 22 September to give the Commission its position. According to the Hungarian government’s earlier information, the commitments include ten specific laws. One of these is the establishment of an independent anti-corruption authority.

The stakes are high. Until the Hungarian government clarifies these issues, it will miss out on huge EU subsidies, hvg.hu reports.
